The Rotary Club of Tacloban was officially organized on September 12, 1946, at a time when the city was rebuilding and looking toward a brighter future after the challenges of World War II.
With 15 dedicated charter members and a community of about 70,000 residents, the club was founded on a shared vision of friendship, service, and civic responsibility.
Guided by Rotary`s ideal of Service Above Self, these pioneers laid the foundation for an organization that has continued to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the people of Tacloban through generations of service and leadership.
Rotary members are volunteers who work locally and internationally to combat disease, promote peace, provide clean water and sanitation, support education, save mothers and children, grow local economies, and protect the environment.
This motto — Service Above Self — encapsulates the Rotary spirit. It reflects the commitment of every Rotarian to prioritize the needs of others above their own personal gain, and to bring about positive change through collective action.
The Paul Harris Fellow recognition was established in 1957 to honor individuals who have made significant contributions to Rotary's humanitarian goals. Named after Rotary's founder, Paul Harris, the recognition acknowledges those who contribute or are sponsored for $1,000 USD (or local equivalent) to The Rotary Foundation.
Paul Harris himself exemplified the Rotary ideal — a professional who believed that success was measured not just by achievement, but by service to others.
